Welcome to puppy parenthood! Bringing a new puppy home is a life-changing event filled with joy, wagging tails, and—let’s be honest—a fair bit of responsibility. Whether you’ve just brought home a tiny Beagle or a bouncy Labrador, those first few months are the "golden window" for setting up a lifetime of health and happiness.
🏠 The First Week: Settling In
The first 48–72 hours are about safety and decompression. Your puppy is adjusting to being away from their mother and littermates for the first time.
Create a "Puppy Zone": Set up a crate or a quiet corner with a soft bed, fresh water, and safe toys. Puppies need 16–18 hours of sleep a day; having a quiet retreat is essential for their development.
The First Vet Visit: Schedule a wellness check within the first 48–72 hours. This early screening is vital for catching hidden issues and establishing a medical baseline.

🍖 Nutrition: Fueling Growth
Puppies have high energy needs but small stomachs. What you put in the bowl now builds the foundation for their immune system and bone health.
Feeding Frequency:
8–12 weeks: 4 meals per day.
3–6 months: 3 meals per day.
6+ months: 2 meals per day.
Portion Control: Always feed based on your puppy's target adult weight, not their current weight, to avoid obesity or skeletal issues.
⚠️ The "Never" List: Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol (artificial sweetener), macadamia nuts, and cooked bones are life-threatening to puppies.
💉 The Health Shield: Vaccinations
In the Sri Lankan context, we prioritize the DHPL protocol (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Leptospirosis) to combat high-prevalence local diseases.
Age | Vaccine / Treatment |
6–8 Weeks | DHPL (1st Dose) + Deworming |
10–12 Weeks | DHPL (2nd Dose) |
14–16 Weeks | DHPL (3rd Dose) + Anti-Rabies Vaccine |
Monthly | Heartworm, Flea, and Tick Prevention |
🦠 Parasite Control: Internal & External
Most puppies are born with or acquire worms through their mother's milk.
Deworming: Start at 2 weeks of age, repeating every 2 weeks until 12 weeks, then monthly until 6 months.
Tick Fever: A major concern in tropical climates. Monthly vet-approved preventatives are the only reliable way to protect your puppy from this silent killer.
🤝 Socialization & Manners
The socialization window (3–14 weeks) is when a puppy’s brain is most receptive to new experiences.
Positive Exposure: Introduce your pup to different surfaces (tile, grass), sounds (vacuum cleaners, traffic), and diverse people.
Positive Reinforcement: Always use treats, praise, and play to encourage good behavior. Never use punishment, as this leads to fear and anxiety in adulthood.
Grooming & Hygiene
Start grooming early so your puppy learns to enjoy the "spa day" experience rather than fearing it.
Dental Care: Brush 2–3 times a week with dog-specific toothpaste to prevent future kidney and heart issues.
Nail Trims: Long nails cause posture problems. Trim every 3–4 weeks using dog-specific clippers.
🏥 Health Warning Signs: When to Call the Vet
Puppies can become ill very quickly. Seek immediate care if you see:
Vomiting or diarrhea lasting over 24 hours.
Loss of appetite for more than 12 hours.
Extreme lethargy or difficulty breathing.
Pale or yellow-tinted gums.
